Totally over male detectives in fiction at the moment. Feel like I need to read the rest of Paretsky’s Warshawski series, as well as more of Reichs’ novels. Annoyed that women have been writing crime fiction for over 100 years, and yet it’s only the token woman (encapsulated by Miss Marple, always) that gets mentioned. What about Miss Butterworth?! Sharon McCone! V. I. Warshawski! Kinsey Millhone! Kay Scarpetta! Temperance Brennan!
That’s not to mention the tons of LGBT and non-white interpretations of crime fiction tradition, a tradition which, I might add, is inherently patriarchal, conservative and alienating towards anyone who is not a white man.
But no, let’s keep churning out cookie cutter male detectives, shall we?
